The number of nations and medal winning nations keeps being constant

This year in total 18 nations won medals, which means one nation more than in 2015 and 2014 while the same quantity of nations started at this championship.

1. Colombia: keeps the leading position

With its 44 medals Colombia won the nation ranking again. In 2015, they won with 45 medals in total. The favourites like Fabriana Arias, Luz Karime Garzón, Jercy Puello, Andres Muñoz, Andres Jimenez… And in junior category Kerstinick Sarmiento, Jaime Uribe, Daniela Mendoza, Saul Herreneo collected in almost every race medals. It is almost impossible to mention all the athletes.
This year Colombia won “only” 20 gold medals, when last year it was 26. This little loss meant some more gold medals for the other South American countries.

2. France: less medals but more titles

Same as in 2014, France got second in the overall ranking. In 2015, Korea beat them so they got third. France won six gold medals which is two more than in 2015. Gwendal Le Pivert won three of the titles (two individually).

3. Italy

After last year’s disappointing 5th place Italy came back strong with 5 World Champion titles and 19 medals in total. This means the best result since 2013 where they got second behind Colombia with also 5 titles. Francesca Lollobrigida won the most medals of the italian team.

4. Argentina: big improvement to the previous years

Thanks to the medal winners Mayra Yaquel Arias (points/eliminatioin track), Juan Cruz Araldi (marathon), Kevin Kumada (20km elimination), Argentina could improve from last year’s 15th Palace and 13th in 2014 to fourth in 2016.

5. Germany

Simon Albrecht could also win this year important medals for the German team. The girls got very strong with Laethisia Schimek and Elisabeth Baier (junior) winning both bronze medals in the 100m drag race. It means a positive future for women’s sprint in the upcoming years.

Mentioning special athletes of Chile and Mexico

Since four years now Maria Jose Moya Sepulveda (CHL) is dominating the 300m and the 100m in women’s sprinting. The Mexican Jorge Luis Martinez Morales surprises this year with his excellent performance in the mens 100m drag race winning against Ioseba Fernandez (ESP) and Simon Albrecht (GER).
